Cartoon Wars

I laughed out loud when this week's South Park synopsis showed up on my TiVo guide: Cartman and Kyle are at war over the popular cartoon, "Family Guy." Kyle loves "Family Guy" and hates Cartman. The two boys embark upon a mad chase across the country and the fate of "Family Guy" lies with the first boy to reach Hollywood.

Classic! Not only did I wonder which show would prevail, I wondered how our family would ally themselves in this all-out war for satirical cartoon supremecy. Ian has already declared his man love for South Park numerous times, including a blog post below. Colin seems like a devoted Family Guy fan. But we'll see how everyone stands up to be counted. To help those in this tough decision, here are some brief show descriptions, straight from TV Guide.

South Park
An animated adult series about four potty-mouthed, trash-talking grade schoolers living in a Colorado town. Rude, crude and seriously funny, it became an immediate hit after its Comedy Central debut in August 1997, inspiring some guest voice appearances by series fans (among them, George Clooney), a feature film and any number of weak cartoon imitations.

Premiered August 13, 1997
10 Seasons
1 Feature Film (Academy Award Nominee)
Never been cancelled
TV-MA

Family Guy
Nihilistic animated antics of the grousing Griffins, including dad Peter, who's stupid, lazy and nasty; mom Lois, who's none of the above; teenagers Meg and Chris; sassy baby Stewie, who's wise (and a wise guy) beyond his year; and family dog Brian, the smartest of the lot. Series creator Seth MacFarlane voices many of the regular characters, as well as a variety of guest characters. Fox canceled the show, then resurrected it in 2005 after it became a top-selling DVD.
Premiered January 31, 1999
4 Seasons
No Feature Films but DVD releases available
Cancelled once, but resurrected due to popular demand
TV-14

So who will win this war? Well, South Park has made it a two-part cliffhanger. We'll have to tune in next week to find out. Right now, everyone needs to stand up and be counted for their side. As far as I'm concerned, this one can only end one way:

I am definitely for South Park. Things have been a bit slow at work lately, and I have been visiting youtube.com to catch old episodes of South Park. Let me say that South Park is hilarious, and far superior to Family Guy. However, this is analogous to saying that Harvard is more prestigious that Princeton. The two are undoubtedly great institutions, but one is clearly far superior. I am Awesom-O. I would like some Sunny D.

while it has fallen very, very far in the last, oh, 10 years or so, my alliance is always with "the simpsons". however, south park is steadily closing the gap as the paramount animated show of our day. from the spirit of christmas to pirate ghosts to a bloody animal orgy, south park has shown that is can endure. family guy, while enjoyable and definitely funny, is most certainly a second class citizen in the realm of "cartoonery" behind both south park and the simpsons.

For sheer laugh out loud hilariousness I may have to go with Family Guy. They pull some shit on that show that makes me almost wet my pants, e.g. Kool-Aid Man, shin kick, etc... However, that's not to say it's the "better" show, that would be South Park. South Park's willingness to savagely attack any and every minority, race, color, creed, and religion and do so in a manner where they get a point across is unparalleled - and it's funny as hell to boot. Plus, every show is written and produced in only 6 days, allowing them to be more relevant. Lastly, South Park is sometimes willing to scale back the hilariousity (just a hair) in order to make a point or get a message across.

There's a place in the world for both though, thank god. Family Guy reigns supreme for slapstick, crude humor (think Dumb & Dumber) whereas South Park is more of a satire and social commentary (think Grosse Pointe Blank, The Royal Tenenbaums, A Modest Proposal or even The Far Side). Both make you laugh out loud to the point of bursting, but one kind of makes you think about why you just shat your pants. And you're never going to mistake Dumb & Dumber for Grosse Pointe Blank, they're not in the same league...

While my first introduction to Family Guy with "Kool-aid Man" had me spit Coke all over my roommates bedroom, I still feel I am more of a South Park fan. Ian is correct in their ability to be funny and convey a point, but I enjoy the fact that they mercilessly attack everything and everyone but don't linger too long on any single topic - except Scientology, which deserves everything it gets.

So count me squarely in the South Park column. And with that said, I believe South Park becomes the winner of animated cartoonery.

I think you all are DEAD WRONG and completely missing the point. THE most biting and just downright enjoyable cartoon out there is Family Circus.

Observe, neophytes...
