Now Maybe Notre Dame Will Join a Conference

Announced today - Dick Ebersol is out as head of NBC Sports, resigning after 22 years in charge. Ebersol was responsible for giving Notre Dame football its own network, which in turn has allowed Notre Dame to consistently say no to potential conference suitors. Ebersol is also a huge ND guy, his oldest son is an alumnus, and was responsible for the current extension of the ND-NBC television contract.

With Ebersol out is there a chance that ND's television contract with NBC won't be renewed after 2015? Who knows. But if that were to happen that could be the nail in ND's coffin of independence. The best way for that contract to keep being a money wagon is to win.

The biggest concern I have about our NBC contract isn't Ebersol (or whoever takes over). It's the NBC/Comcast merger.

It's clear that the new mega-media network is looking to expand it's sports coverage. They went HARD after the new Pac-12 contract. So hard that ESPN and Fox had to pool together to win it.It's just a matter of time before they acquire the rights to a BCS conference. When that happens, will ND be forced into regional coverage - or dropped altogether? Who knows, but you can bet NBC will no longer be the exclusive ND network for long.
