Before and After

On the top you see a picture from Google Street View of an intersection in Joplin, MO from a few weeks back.

In the bottom you see a photograph of the same intersection taken after tornados ravaged Joplin on Sunday.

Two words come to mind. Holy. Shit.

Looking at that top picture it's nearly incomprehensible (at least for me) that the same area could ever possibly look like it does in the lower half. Apparently a few Joplin residents commented on the photos to confirm their authenticity, but I'm still trying to matchup landmarks between the two and I see some inconsistencies, e.g. no sign of that tree nearest the intersection and missing the concrete corner on the intersection where it meets the asphalt.

If this is legit, it's just incredible. Tornados are bad. Who knew?

OK, my exact words were "Holy Shit!" It looks like they got bombed.

I think the photos are the same. The second photo looks as if it was taken a little further down the street, judging by the dip in the road.

Also, the Joplin tornado was an F5, meaning winds over 200mph. Since 2007, there have been 6 F5-rated tornadoes in the US, and four of them have occurred in April or May 2011. Talk about a bad year to work for an insurance company. Dammit!

Kev's right. You can see the corner curb just a tiny bit in the front right of the bottom pic.

The same system came through Cincy Monday night, and it was one of the scariest looking stormfronts I have ever seen. Trees were sideways and we were in the basement.

ps: Don't worry about work Kev. I know from experience. The insurance companies will weasel out of trying to pay people's claims and then just drop coverage in Joplin - or maybe the entire state of Missouri so they don't get screwed again! See Louisiana post-Katrina.

Yeah, Nationwide stop writing policies in Florida and a lot of other southern states because of the losses from hurricanes. Since there hasn't been a big season in America since Katrina, the companies that came in later have been making a killing charging premium rates!

HOLY shit! Unreal compare pic there Ted. Good find. I saw the unbelievable before and after aerial photo of around the hospital and that was bad enough. Sweet Lord, like the best movie of all time Twister says about the F5 "The Finger of God". They can scrape up pavement... :weathersnufffilm:
