Sam Young, Golden Domer

Yesterday Sam Young, a 6-foot-8, 302lb, high school senior, who also happens to be the highest ranked OL recruit in the nation, chose Notre Dame over USC. Guys this size don't grow on trees and, with a depleted O-line, it's a boon for Notre Dame's recruiting class. That Notre Dame beat out USC in the process is just icing on the cake. Young was quoted as saying that academics played a large part in his decision to choose Notre Dame, but he's not kidding anyone. If ND had finished the season at 6-6, Young would be a Trojan.

Just look at that kid - if he wasn't born to were the Blue & Gold, I don't know who was. Oh, and by the way, I totally had another post planned in case Young chose USC that said 6-8, 302lb linemen do grow on trees and more often than not, they never reach their potential. But I'm glad I didn't have to go with that one.

I've heard a lot about USC's recruiting class and Penn State's from the national media, but I haven't heard them say much about ND's class. I've been following recruiting pretty religiously for ND and maybe I'm too close to still be objective, but I look at our recruiting class and see 28 guys that could start at a lot of other schools. Why is it that the USC's, PSU's, and Florida State's that are getting all the recruiting attention and ND is left high-and-dry? If we're not the #1 class, we've got to be at worst top-5, right? Can someone tell me why we're getting no exposure?

Because it is about quality not just quantity. Actually, Florida has the #1 class. The reason is that they have more 4 and 5 star recruits then we do. However, I feel that it is more important to address positional concerns, as we did with OL, then to get the 5 best WR's. Word on the street is that our #1 CB recruit, Rasheon McNeil, is taking a visit to Florida before signing day. Let's hope he's not a turncoat.

Couple recruiting points. Obviously I am a little biased, but this is an actual problem that has been discussed all over the web...

When a recruit commits to ND, somehow they always drop in the recruiting rankings. It's really comical. We had four or five 5-star recruits at one time. However, when they commit to us, they get dropped in the ranks - even though their season is over and nothing about them has changed!

It usually happens in bunches. There were 2 different days this winter when 7 or 8 ND players dropped at the same time!!! Check the Rivals free ND board and you'll find a couple threads about it. I have no idea why this happens, but it really does hurt recruiting. If you sign a ton of hot recruits, other guys on the fence can be swayed to commit. It hurts when you have a bunch of 3-stars.

Next point is about our publicity. We have been getting a lot, but we will not have the #1 class because of the reasons I discussed above. Not enough 5-stars - but that's because some idiot in a room typing on a computer decided that if Carufel committed to ND, he must not be that good and should drop.

Finally, McNeil did visit Florida, but he will be coming to ND. They are already filled up with recruits. But beware!!! Crazy shit always happens on signing day. ND has lost many a committed recruit on the big day. Maybe we can snag one away from someone else. I think we still have 1 spot left!
